What Is Blepharoplasty?
As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles that support them begin to weaken. This results in excess fat gathering above or below the eyelids, resulting in drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes. In some cases, this can impair a person's vision, particularly their peripheral vision. When this happens, we suggest that our vision patients come into our state-of-the-art office for a blepharoplasty consultation. This eyelid surgery in Napa, CA removes that excess skin and tightens the remaining skin for improved vision and a better appearance. Signs you may want to schedule a consultation with one of the board-certified eye surgeons at Eye Specialists of Napa Valley, include baggy or droopy upper eyelids (ptosis), excess skin on the upper eyelids that make it difficult to see, or excess skin on the lower eyelids.
Who Is A Candidate For A Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can benefit both men and women. Ideal candidates for an eye lift treatment are frustrated with excess, hanging skin and folds on the top eyelid, impaired peripheral vision, or bulging skin below the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause functional problems that can hinder everyday activities. An eyelid or underye lift is an effective way to protect and improve your vision and reduce the appearance of excess skin around the eyes. If you have hanging skin that folds over on the upper eyelid or bulges and puffiness under the eyes, blepharoplasty can fix this to give you a younger appearance while reducing the risk of vision impairment.
How Does Blepharoplasty Work?
This outpatient eyelid surgery will begin by injecting a numbing medication into your eyelids to help you relax and feel comfortable. From there, one of our ophthalmologists will begin by making an incision in the natural crease of your upper eyelid. He or she will remove some excess skin, muscle, and fat, then close the incision. This procedure typically takes about an hour, after which you can return home to rest and recover. After your surgery, you may experience watery eyes, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and swelling. This is normal and should not last more than a few days. You may find relief by using an ice pack every hour for about 10 minutes following your surgery, and once every 4 - 5 hours the day after your surgery. It is important to gently clean your eyelids and use the ointment we prescribe you to promote healthy healing, as well as avoiding strenuous activities. We will schedule follow-up visits as necessary.
